First race jitters are real. For the kids AND the parents. Here's how to show up ready.

So your kid came home one day with fire in their eyes and said they want to race motocross. Maybe they saw it on TV.

Maybe a friend races. Maybe they just climbed on a bike one day and never wanted to get off.

Whatever brought you here, WELCOME. You're about to enter one of the most passionate, most dedicated, most rewarding communities in motorsports.

And yes, it can feel overwhelming at first. We're here to help.

STEP 1 — FIND THE RIGHT CLASS.

Motocross has classes for every age and skill level. At 543 MX we run 15 classes from 50cc all the way to 450 National. Here's a quick breakdown for beginners:

  • 50cc Open — Ages 4-8. The youngest riders. Perfect first class.

  • 50cc Shaft — Ages 4-8. Shaft drive bikes only.

  • 65cc Beginner — Ages 7-11. New riders stepping up.

  • 85cc Beginner — Ages 9-13. Building confidence on bigger bikes.

  • 250/450 Beginner — All ages. First time on a full size bike? Start here.

When in doubt, always start in a beginner class. The beginner class exists for exactly this moment.

STEP 2 — WHAT BIKE DO YOU NEED?

Your child's class determines their bike. A few general rules:

  • 50cc classes — 50cc bike

  • 65cc classes — 65cc bike

  • 85cc classes — 85cc bike

  • Bigger classes — 250cc or 450cc

Don't overbike your kid. A rider on the right size bike will always perform better and safer than a rider on a bike that's too big.

STEP 3 — GEAR UP.

Safety first. Always. Here's the basic gear list every rider needs:

  • Helmet — DOT or Snell certified

  • Goggles

  • Jersey and pants

  • Gloves

  • Boots — motocross specific

  • Chest protector

  • Knee and elbow pads

You don't have to buy the most expensive gear on day one. Good quality used gear is perfectly fine for a first race. Ask around at the track. The motocross community is generous with advice and hand me downs.

STEP 4 — RACE DAY. WHAT TO EXPECT.

At 543 MX race day runs like this:

  • Saturday — Open practice. Come learn the track. Get comfortable. No pressure.

  • Sunday — Race day. Three motos per class. Points tallied. Champions crowned.

Arrive early. Give yourself time to sign in, walk the track, and let your rider get comfortable before the gate drops.

STEP 5 — WHAT TO BRING.

Pack like you're going camping (because sometimes you are):

  • Plenty of water and snacks

  • Sunscreen

  • Canopy or shade tent

  • Chairs

  • Tools and spare parts

  • Extra fuel

  • A camera — you'll want to remember this day

If you have an RV or camper, 543 MX has you covered. RV and camper parking is available at every event.

ONE LAST THING.

Your kid is going to fall. They're going to have bad motos. They're going to come off the track frustrated sometimes.

That's not failure. That's motocross.

The lesson they learn getting back up. That's worth more than any trophy.

See you at the gate. 🏁
